  • The Tumandok and Ati people originally inhabited the island of Boracay, but commercial development has led to their severe marginalization since the 1970s.
  • Boracay is ascribed to different origins. The island’s native Ati people said that the name Boracay came from the Inati words “BORA” meaning “BUBBLES” and “BOCAY” meaning “WHITE”. Some suggest another theory that the name BORACAY came from the local word “BORAC” meaning “WHITE COTTON” thus referring to the color and texture of the islands powdery white sand. Another version dating back to the Spanish era is that the name came from the word “SAGAAY” a word for “SHELL” and “BORAY” a word for “SEED”.
  • Locally shortened from Boracay to Bora.
  • The island is located 0.8km off the northwest coast of Panay Island and has a total land area of 10.32 square kilometers under the jurisdiction of 3 barangays in Malay, Aklan. As of 2020, the total population was 37, 802.
  • This tiny tropical island in West Visayas is considered the beach capital of the Philippines because there are more than 12 beaches on it. This island is ideal for people who are into simple relaxation.
  • Boracay is known for its pristine white sand beaches, smaller islands, breathtaking sunsets, fun and exciting water activities, beautiful resorts, and its vibrant night life at the clubs and bars.
  • Boracay has won multiple awards in previous year and is the most iconic island in the Philippines. Tourist from all over the world can’t resist the beauty of this island.
  • Travel Leisure, an International travel magazine, ranked Boracay as the Best Island in the world in 2012. Conde Nast Traveler, published a list of “Best Islands in the World” in 2014 and the resort island was the top of it. In 2016, Boracay headed the magazine’s list of TOP 10 Destinations to Watch.
  • In April 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte decreed a 6 month closure of the island for tourist to work for the betterment of the island specially the sewage system which had become outdated and insufficient.
  • In January 2024, Boracay’s Ati-atihan had a record breaking number of tourist with a number of 36, 741 partakers in the event.

The beaches on the island

White Beach is found on the west side of the island and is one of the best beaches in the Philippines.

Puka Shell is found on the tip of the island. It is the favorite spot for shell collectors.

Cagban Beach is a quiet spot which has nearby caves rumored to still have treasure chest.

Diniwid Beach a tiny beach found in the North end of the White Beach. It has the best view of the island from a platform rock which is located there.

Mount Luho is the highest point of their island. You can take a day trip for a panoramic view of the island.

Boracay offers an amazing experience with its breathtaking natural scenery, featuring soft white sand beaches and turquoise waters that inspire leisure and adventure. The island has a bustling environment, with plenty of beachfront bars, restaurants, and entertainment options to suit every taste. Bomb jokes are no jokes, AirAsia Philippines reminds the public

*AirAsia reminds the public of proper decorum when flying

This amidst the increasing number of guests traveling to different island destinations in the country, as well as other international destinations with colder weather.

While guests are flying to relax and already are in jovial mood, AirAsia would like to emphasize that its ground and flight crew will not tolerate any unruly decorum, which include the cracking of bomb jokes that can seriously disrupt the flight and ruin vacation plans. All AirAsia employees are Safety experts, trained to professionally deal with all kinds of threats.

“Bomb jokes and other security-related issues are taken seriously out of rigorous protocol. AirAsia reiterates that bomb jokes are immediately interpreted as a security threat. Moreso, it can make other guests uncomfortable or traumatize especially first-time passengers,” shares AirAsia Philippines Head of Communications and Public Affairs and First Officer Steve Dailisan.

Aside from delaying your planned vacation, bomb jokes also carry serious penalties in relation to existing Philippine laws under Presidential Decree 1727 and Republic Act 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2000, both punishable by up to 5 years in prison or a fine of PHP40,000.

The World’s Best Low-Cost Airline also reminds the public of the proper decorum when flying especially amongst other guests.  Having properly seated will allow the smooth boarding of the rest of the guests which could greatly contribute to the timely dispatch of the flight.

Alcoholic intoxication is also highly discouraged during flight. Unruly passengers can be subjected to disciplinary actions such as being reprimanded or offloaded during the flight. Therefore, guests are expected to abide by AirAsia’s published terms and conditions of carriage.

Lastly, AirAsia would like to emphasize that maintaining cleanliness inside the aircraft is always a shared responsibility.

“While the cabin crew performs routine trash collection, it will also help save time and contribute to the flight’s on-time performance if guests observe proper disposal of trash, especially upon disembarking the aircraft”, Dailisan added.
