- The Tumandok and Ati people originally inhabited the island of Boracay, but commercial development has led to their severe marginalization since the 1970s.
- Boracay is ascribed to different origins. The island’s native Ati people said that the name Boracay came from the Inati words “BORA” meaning “BUBBLES” and “BOCAY” meaning “WHITE”. Some suggest another theory that the name BORACAY came from the local word “BORAC” meaning “WHITE COTTON” thus referring to the color and texture of the islands powdery white sand. Another version dating back to the Spanish era is that the name came from the word “SAGAAY” a word for “SHELL” and “BORAY” a word for “SEED”.

- The island is located 0.8km off the northwest coast of Panay Island and has a total land area of 10.32 square kilometers under the jurisdiction of 3 barangays in Malay, Aklan. As of 2020, the total population was 37, 802.

The beaches on the island
White Beach is found on the west side of the island and is one of the best beaches in the Philippines.
Puka Shell is found on the tip of the island. It is the favorite spot for shell collectors.
Cagban Beach is a quiet spot which has nearby caves rumored to still have treasure chest.
Diniwid Beach a tiny beach found in the North end of the White Beach. It has the best view of the island from a platform rock which is located there.
Mount Luho is the highest point of their island. You can take a day trip for a panoramic view of the island.
